Power supply under control, but critical after technical issues

Kralendijk, September 10th  2024 – After a so-called “Brown Out” in several parts of Bonaire, WEB has managed to partially bring the situation under control. The problem that occurred was not related to a lack of production capacity, but to a problem that occurred on one of the two transportation lines between Contour Global Bonaire (CGB) and Water- en Energiebedrijf Bonaire (WEB).

WEB technicians worked hard through the night and throughout the day to resolve the issue at hand and restore power to much of the island in a controlled and safe manner. At the same time, inspection work is taking place on the affected line. These works will continue until the inspection and repair works on the affected transmission line are completed.

Due to a technical failure that occurred during the power supply restoration process, at 1:40 p.m. WEB and CGB need to resume delivery in several areas of Bonaire. During this transition phase, WEB’s priority was to restore power to Fundashon Mariadal and vital services and installations by 1:45 p.m., followed by necessary precautions to the remaining areas that remained without power.

Due to the limited transport capacity between the production facility in Karpata and Kralendijk, a switching program will have to be applied from now on, due to which certain areas will be without electricity for a pre-determined period. The program will be communicated through our social media and local media.

At this moment, WEB is prioritizing monitoring the situation, but a press conference is planned soon. WEB urges the population of Bonaire to use electricity consciously so that the available energy can be distributed to as many customers as possible.
